Family Systems Therapy
Family therapists gain a better understanding of their clients through the lens of their relationships within the family. This often means exploring a client’s childhood experiences within his or her family of origin, as well as exploring current relationships with spouse, children, in-laws, etc. Sometimes “family” can even be a constructed family of friends if the biological family is not involved. These primary relationships can have a profound impact on one’s well-being, so the whole family system is taken into consideration, even when an individual client comes through the door. Sometimes family members are invited for a visit to help us with a client’s goals and progress. It can be tremendously helpful when a whole family gathers for an extended session, which can benefit several family members at once.
